About this calculator
NZ sick leave entitlement was increased from 5 to 10 days per year on 24 July 2021. Sick leave accrues after 6 months of employment, then resets each anniversary year.
- Up to 20 days can be carried over between years.
- Sick leave covers your own illness, partner, child, or other dependant in your care.
- Pay during sick leave = Relevant Daily Pay (what you'd have earned that day).
Frequently asked questions
Can my employer require a doctor's note?
Yes if absence exceeds 3 consecutive calendar days, or shorter if the employer pays the doctor's fee.
