About this calculator
Income protection pays a monthly benefit (typically 75% of pre-disability income) if illness or injury stops you working. Premium depends on age, occupation, smoker status, the wait period before benefits start, and how long benefits are paid.
- Wait period — 4, 8, 13, 26 or 52 weeks. Longer waits drop the premium materially.
- Benefit term — to age 65 (gold standard) is 1.8× the cost of a 2-year benefit term.
- Benefit payments are taxable income at your marginal rate.
