About this calculator
NZ has 12 public holidays. If you work on a public holiday, the Holidays Act 2003 entitles you to time-and-a-half *and*, if it would otherwise be a working day for you, an alternative paid day off (a "day in lieu").
- Time-and-a-half = 1.5× your relevant daily pay or average daily pay.
- Alternative day applies only if the public holiday falls on a day you'd normally work.
- If the public holiday falls on a day you wouldn't normally work and you do work, you get time-and-a-half but no alternative day.
