About this calculator

Each March 31, IRD compares the PAYE you actually had withheld against the correct PAYE based on your full annual income. The difference is your refund or bill.

  • A refund typically arises from: irregular pay, partial-year work, secondary tax over-withholding, charitable donation tax credits.
  • A bill typically arises from: secondary income under-withheld, unrecorded interest income, foreign earnings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to file a return?
Most salaried earners get an automatic income tax assessment from IRD — no return needed. Self-employed, rental owners and those with overseas income file an IR3.
When does IRD pay the refund?
Most refunds land within 2–6 weeks of the assessment date (around July).
