About this calculator
Calculate the monthly repayment on a New Zealand car loan after taking off your deposit and trade-in value.
- Enter the on-the-road price including registration, WoF and on-road costs.
- Subtract any cash deposit and the value of any trade-in vehicle. The remainder is the loan amount.
- Car loans in NZ typically have terms of 1 to 7 years. Shorter terms cost more per month but a lot less in total interest.
- Dealer-arranged finance is often more expensive than going directly to a bank or credit union.
Frequently asked questions
What car-loan interest rates are typical in NZ?
Secured used-car loans typically run 9–13% p.a.; new-car loans are sometimes lower if backed by a manufacturer-subsidised rate. Unsecured deals are 15%+.
Is dealer finance a good idea?
It can be convenient, but compare the dealer's offer to a pre-approved bank or credit-union loan. The headline rate may include hidden fees built into the price.
Should I get a longer term to lower the payment?
A longer term lowers the monthly repayment but you pay much more total interest, and you may end up "underwater" — owing more than the car is worth — if the car depreciates faster than you pay it off.
